Voice Xpress
The natural language processing system I worked on was developed for a product called VoiceCommands with a grant from the NIST advanced technology program ( ATP ). This NLP system is now what Lernhout and Hauspie call their Natural Language Technology ( NLT ), and is in a wide array of their products, and now has grammars in at least four languages ( english, french, german and dutch ) and commands for hundreds of applications.
VoiceCommands is a speech recognition program that provides natural language command and control for Microsoft Word. It was a product of Lernhout and Hauspie. It has a really nice natural language engine that lets you command your word processor in natural english - not in some kind of computer gibberish.
Download a little self executing movie of the program in action to see how it works.
I'll try to have an explanation of the NLP technology if there is any interest. Once you see this product running it should be clear that this engine would be a great thing for computer games.
I am listed as an inventor on two patents based on this technology
( grammar patent, and
WCIS patent). The tools
described in the grammar patent, including the grammar
compiler, and the dll's that execute the runtime system are available
from L+H as part of a speech
technology SDK.
The SDK does not explain
how to use the rewrite part of the system, but that system is in the
SDK, and the patent explains how it works. This download is the
version 4.5 of the "trial" SDK. A "full" version of SDK 5.0 is
available from L+H
for a fee. Note that for these SDK's to work you need to have a full
version of L+H Voice Xpress 2.03 or higher for the SDK to work.
